An insurance illustration should make assumptions understandable

UNDERSTAND THE CHALLENGE

The business issue

An illustration can help explain how a product may behave, but its usefulness depends on clear assumptions and a proper distinction between guaranteed and non-guaranteed elements. Better graphics should improve understanding rather than create unwarranted confidence.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

01

Make the basis visible

Show the relevant assumptions, product features and limitations in a form the intended audience can use. Keep guaranteed and non-guaranteed values distinguishable where applicable. Product-specific and jurisdiction-specific illustration requirements need specialist review; a generic chart cannot establish compliance.

02

Use scenarios to explain sensitivity

Where permitted and appropriate, show how changes in assumptions affect the result without implying that selected scenarios are predictions. Explain the purpose of each view. Avoid visually emphasizing an optimistic path while making important limitations difficult to find.

03

Control generation and communication

Version inputs and calculation rules, test representative products and retain the approved output. AI can help explain approved content but should not invent values or modify required disclosures. Advisers and authorized specialists should review the communication in the context of the customer and the product.
