A life policy or annuity can remain in force long after its original systems and assumptions were designed. Managing that promise requires more than a periodic valuation: it requires a coherent view of how liabilities, assets and policyholder behavior interact over time.
UNDERSTAND THE CHALLENGE
The business issue
A liability team may test longevity while an investment team tests interest rates and operations studies surrender volumes. Each analysis can be useful, yet the combined cash demands may remain invisible. An economically attractive position can still create operational strain if cash is needed before assets can be realized on acceptable terms.
PUT IT INTO PRACTICE
Respect the contract before refining the model
Start with benefits, guarantees, options, fees and contractual constraints. Record how product features differ by issue generation. A modern platform should preserve the meaning of older promises rather than forcing unlike contracts into one convenient data field.
Create a reconciled inventory linking policy records, assumptions and projection rules. Investigate missing guarantees and inconsistent payment frequencies before investing in a more sophisticated model. Precision in the output cannot repair a misrepresented contract.
Test behavior and liquidity together
Use scenarios that connect economic conditions with plausible policyholder responses. Consider alternative lapse and withdrawal assumptions, their evidential basis and the limits of available experience. Apply investment and liability assumptions consistently; distinguish prescribed reporting assumptions from management scenarios.
Our recommendation is to show both the projected economic result and the timing of cash requirements. A management action is credible only if its authority, execution time, transaction costs and operational constraints have been considered. Do not assume an asset sale or repricing response occurs instantly.
Govern the transition from analysis to action
Separate the analyst’s scenario from the approved production basis. Keep parameter versions, model changes and the reason for overrides accessible to reviewers. Human scrutiny should focus on material assumptions and unusual outcomes, not the repeated assembly of files.
For a closed book, review how expense allocation, shrinking policy counts and service obligations affect the result. A lower total operating bill does not necessarily mean a lower cost per remaining policy. Present both measures and identify costs that cannot disappear while policyholder obligations continue.

A GOVERNED DECISION SEQUENCE
Map the promises
Link benefits, guarantees and policy options to validated records.
Map the promises
Link benefits, guarantees and policy options to validated records.
Project connected scenarios
Assess asset and liability cash flows with consistent economic assumptions.
Review feasible actions
Test liquidity, servicing constraints and approval authority before action.
↻ Evidence returns to the next review. Human accountability stays visible.
Ask the leadership teamCan we explain both the value of our long-term promises and how we will fund them when conditions change?
MEASURE WHAT MATTERS
Evidence of a stronger process
Establish a baseline and agree targets for your organization. These are proposed measures, not claimed results.
Contract completeness
Material product features represented and reconciled to source records.
Cash-flow sensitivity
Timing and scale of changes under approved scenario assumptions.
Action feasibility
Proposed responses with documented authority and realistic execution constraints.
How Genellipse helps
AegisNow can support the connection between life administration, actuarial review and operational decisions. GeneData can organize historical policy and cash-flow inputs, while Cortex AI can help retrieve approved documentation and assemble scenario-review packs. Genellipse would agree the models, integrations and governance with the insurer; professional actuarial and investment responsibilities remain with the designated specialists.
